Brikele,
a concert of Yiddish songs
SYNCOOP 5757 CD 207
Brike means "little bridge" in Yiddish, and
that is exactly what this CD is meant to be: a little bridge to the almost vanished
world and culture of the Jews in Eastern Europe.
On this CD a lot of attention has been paid to the Polish-Jewish folk poet and
composer Mordekhay Gebirtig (1877-1942). In his songs he reflected Jewish everyday
life. He did this in such a loving and respectful way to the people he wrote
about, that his songs are living documents: recognizable, moving, playful and
intrusive. Jacques has arranged all the songs, and wrote the music for a poem
of Gebirtig. He accompanies Mariejan on the grand piano, the cymbal and the
guitar.
